Travel guide: Bahrain

Bahrain is more than just a stopover: this small island nation combines 5,000 years of history with a modern Arabian way of life. In a compact area you'll find UNESCO World Heritage sites, bustling souks, desert landscapes and island beaches. Bahraini hospitality is legendary, and English is understood almost everywhere.

Mobile internet in Bahrain

The STC and Batelco mobile networks cover the whole country reliably – from Manama to the remote islands. In towns you'll surf on 5G, outside them mostly on fast 4G. Connections are stable, including along the King Fahd Causeway to Saudi Arabia.

Public Wi-Fi is available in hotels, malls and at the airport, but often requires registration and has a time limit. An eSIM is therefore the most convenient choice: you're online right after landing and can move around freely without hunting for hotspots.

These apps make everyday life easier: Google Maps for navigation, Uber or Careem for taxi rides and a translation app for Arabic – often helpful in the souk or in local restaurants. For restaurant recommendations, it's worth checking local review apps.

Highlights in Bahrain

Pearling Path in Muharraq

This UNESCO World Heritage site takes you through the narrow alleys of Muharraq's old town, past traditional houses with wind towers and former pearl merchants' shops. The route tells the story of pearl diving, which once made Bahrain rich.

Bahrain National Museum

The country's best museum gives a comprehensive overview of 5,000 years of history – from the Dilmun civilisation to the present day. The exhibition is modern and air-conditioned, ideal for hot days.

Hawar Islands

The archipelago in the south is a nature reserve and home to flamingos, cormorants and dugongs. You can reach the islands by boat for birdwatching and quiet beaches – a contrast to the bustle of the city.

A'ali Village and Dilmun burial mounds

The pottery village of A'ali is known for its traditional workshops, where old techniques are still used. The surrounding burial mounds are among the largest prehistoric cemeteries in the world and are a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Bahrain International Circuit

The Formula 1 track in Sakhir is worth a visit outside race weekends too. On guided tours you'll see the pit lane, and on some days you can even drive a racing car or go-kart yourself.

Al Dar Islands

The small islands off the coast are a popular destination for a relaxed day by the water. You can reach sandy beaches by boat, go snorkelling, kayaking or simply enjoy the sun.

Practical travel tips

  • A rental car is worth it for flexibility – the island is small, the roads are well developed, and parking is usually not a problem.
  • Use Uber or Careem for short trips: reliable, bookable via app and often cheaper than conventional taxis.
  • Plan Friday as a rest day: many shops and attractions don't open until after midday prayers.
  • In summer, outdoor activities are only bearable in the early morning – move the rest to air-conditioned malls or museums.
  • For a beach day, book a day pass at a beach club or head to Al Dar Islands – public beaches are rare and often not suitable for swimming.
  • Try the local cuisine: machboos (spiced rice with meat or fish) and gahwa (coffee with cardamom) are a must.

Do’s

  • Drink the Arabic coffee (gahwa) you're offered and take the cup with your right hand – when you've had enough, shake it slightly.
  • Wear long, loose clothing when visiting mosques and traditional quarters – it shows respect and protects you from the sun.
  • Learn a few Arabic words like “shukran” (thank you) or “marhaba” (hello) – locals appreciate it.
  • Bargain in the souk with respect and a smile – a friendly chat is part of the shopping experience.
  • Be defensive and patient in traffic, even if others are pushy – aggression is not appreciated.

Don’ts

  • Never point the soles of your feet at other people – in Arab culture this is considered insulting.
  • Don't photograph people praying in mosques or at religious sites.
  • Don't drink alcohol outside licensed hotels and restaurants – possessing alcohol in public is punishable by law.
  • Don't use obscene gestures or swear words – this can be considered a criminal offence.
  • Don't litter on the street or beach – Bahrain has strict environmental protection laws.

Bahrain eSIM – frequently asked questions

Which Bahrain eSIM plan do I need?

That depends on how much data you use: for navigation, messaging and occasional browsing 1–3 GB per week is usually enough; for social media, video calls or hotspot rather 5 GB or more. The plans cost between €4.99 and €47.99.

When does the validity of my eSIM start?

Validity only starts when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination for the first time. So you can safely install it before your trip.

Will my normal phone number stay reachable?

Yes. This is a data-only eSIM installed in addition to your SIM card. Calls and SMS still use your normal number – mind your provider’s roaming prices.

Does the eSIM work with my phone?

Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. This includes all iPhones from XS/XR, Samsung Galaxy from S20 and Google Pixel from 3. See “Compatible devices” for the full list.

How do I set up the eSIM?

After purchase you receive a QR code by email. Scan it in your phone’s mobile network settings, select the eSIM for mobile data and switch on data roaming for the eSIM at your destination.

Do I need to set an APN?

Yes. After installation, enter the APN globaldata in the eSIM’s mobile network settings. We show you how, step by step, after your purchase.

Do WhatsApp, Google and Instagram work with the eSIM?

In most Asian countries, yes, without restrictions. In some countries (e.g. China) certain services are blocked on local networks; travel eSIMs usually route data abroad, so these services generally remain available. We cannot guarantee this, though.

Is an eSIM cheaper than a SIM card at the airport?

Often, yes – mainly because you do not lose time at the airport, do not need to show your passport and know the exact price in advance. Your normal SIM also stays in your phone.
